The ever growing list of must-haves for my at-home office

When your to-do list includes office supplies!

I started my company in all of about five minutes (okay, three days), so the first days of my startup was realizing I needed a few things to make sure I wasn’t going to flop. Being lucky enough to have a circle of support that shepherded me through the nitty-gritty of starting a business (ahem, tax stuff), I knew I had to get my shop up and running for the day to day.

Thankfully, we had recently redone our home office so I didn’t have to worry about a work space. However, as far as furniture goes, we had none. Unless you count the treadmill (and not one of those new age walking desks).

So, naturally, I set out to get a desk and office chair post haste. Being a new company however, meant keeping expenses low, so I did what any normal person does in need of less expensive furniture – I headed to my local IKEA. I stumbled upon the Klimpen desk with Lalle legs, and had visions of spraying the legs gold… that is still on a to do list somewhere!

Finding a chair was not as easy, and the search lasted well over a year. In the meantime, I used an extra dining room chair that was being stored, and it did the job for some time. I would search every now and then online or while out shopping, and it wasn’t until I saw the Velvet Pleated Desk Chair in pool (the color is closer to a soft mint than blue) at Pottery Barn Teen that my office started coming together.

It is important for me to keep everything digitally, in order to be able to manage multiple clients when I am out and about, so I rely on Google Drive and the Notability app for my iPad Pro (I could write an entire post about the virtues of this app and how it has singlehandedly organized everything so efficiently, and thus, highly recommend this tool!). But, I recently found that I needed to keep track of client documents and important files, and somehow made it through my 30s without needing a filing cabinet.

That is until I ordered this little 3-drawer filing cabinet from Poppin. I love how sleek it is, especially since I wanted it out of site, and it not only fits perfectly in the closet behind my desk, but my printer is right at home on top.

Aside from the physical items I needed, my other go-to needs are the number of subscriptions I signed up for:

  • Quickbooks Self-Employed – accounting and figuring out taxes is by far the least fun part of having your own company

  • SproutSocial – this is my favorite tool to manage multiple clients’ social media feeds and scheduled posts

  • Photoshop – I use this enough to warrant having the Adobe Creative Cloud, and prefer it to InDesign, tbh

  • Canva – this is the best design tool in the history of the land for managing graphics for social media posts and creating quick design projects that don’t require a lot of graphic design elements

  • The local Business Journal – I like to be in the know about businesses in my area and what companies are coming to the area

  • The Washington Post – because after watching The Post I signed up immediately. I read the news multiple times a day, but knowing that I am supporting journalism is important to me.
